We are pleased to announce the publication of the paper “Persistently Increased Frequency of Diabetic Ketoacidosis in New-Onset Type 1 Diabetes in Polish Children: Nationwide Analysis 2019–2022,” published in Frontiers in Endocrinology.

The article is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Biostatistics and Translational Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics, Diabetology, Endocrinology and Nephrology at the Medical University of Lodz, together with pediatric diabetes centers from across Poland.

The analysis included data from 17 clinical centers, providing a nationwide overview of the frequency of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) among children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes between 2019 and 2022.

The study findings indicate that, despite the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency of DKA at the time of type 1 diabetes diagnosis remained high through December 2022. This represents an important public health issue that requires the joint efforts of healthcare professionals, patients, parents, and society as a whole. We therefore encourage everyone to learn more about the available screening programs and nationwide educational campaigns aimed at promoting earlier recognition of type 1 diabetes in children and reducing the proportion of cases diagnosed only after the development of diabetic ketoacidosis.
